Considered the largest community folk arts
project in history, the AIDS Memorial Quilt
helps us remember the unique lives and
stories of those we’ve lost to HIV/AIDS.
Individuals and groups create Quilt panels to
honor, remember and celebrate the stories
and lives of loved ones lost to HIV/AIDS.
Today, it would take 18 days to view the entire
AIDS Memorial Quilt if you spent 30 seconds
taking in each Quilt panel. Each year, sections of
the Quilt travel to more than 500 diverse and
multi-generational communities, directly
touching an estimated 1.5M+ people.
Change The Pattern, a new program from the
National AIDS Memorial, Southern AIDS
Coalition and Gilead Sciences, brought the Quilt
to Black and LatinX communities across the
South, where HIV rates are highest in the US.
The Quilt was used as a teaching tool to prevent
future cases, share stories of those lost, and
reduce stigma.
